Blue Envelope Program to Assist Drivers with Autism

A new program aimed at helping drivers with autism to navigate traffic stops is making its way across the country. Already adopted in states like Massachusetts, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maine and Arizona, the Blue Envelope Program assists drivers in communicating with police officers when they are pulled over.

Blue envelopes, which are available through participating police departments, hold a driver’s license, registration and insurance card and can be handed to a police officer during a traffic stop. The outside of the envelope offers room to write specific instructions that can inform officers about the best way to communicate with the driver, along with information about any triggers or impairments, and the driver’s diagnosis.

To request a Blue Envelope, contact your local police station to ask if the program is active in your area.
