Wheelchair Users Could Fly in Their Own Chairs by 2025 with New DOT and FAA Initiative

By the end of 2025, wheelchair users may have the ability to fly in their own chairs on aircrafts. The Department of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Delta Air Lines have announced they are working to allow travelers with wheelchairs to fly sitting in their own equipment in specially designed adaptive seating rows.

According to DOT data, U.S. airlines damage or destroy approximately 10,000-15,000 wheelchairs and mobility devices every year. Creating on-plane space for wheelchairs - rather than requiring  devices to be checked - will help travelers keep their equipment in tact and provide a more accessible flight experience.

While in-cabin wheelchair securement is going through the approvals process, and the feasibility of installing wheelchair restraint systems in aircraft cabins is expected to be approved, airlines will still need time to install the systems, which may extend beyond 2025.
